Listening Skills
- Listening a little every day is better than not listening at all for long periods..ya pasti lah yach:)
- Don't expect to understand every word. Try to get the general sense of what people are saying. Don't panic if you 'lose' the sense of what you hear - keep listening nad try to pick it up again.
- You can usually get the sense by concentrating on the stressed words. Don't worry too much about the unstressed words (articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, etc)
- If you have access to TV programmes or films in the original English, try listening to them without looking the sub-titles and see how much you can understand. You can also download sound files from the internet or listen to the BBC world service.
- Listen to different varieties of English (British, American and Australian) to help get used to different accents and vocabulary. Also listen to the English spoken by people whose first language is not English .
- Read the first and last sentences of the paragraph carefully. They usually contain the most important information
- Skip over the words and phrases you don't know or can't guess immediately. You can come back later
- Try to summarise the three or four main points of what you have read after you have finished the text
- Read as much as you can in English - newspaper, graded reader, websites...anything! You wont improve you reading speed without practice!
